Process Evolution in a Mad World
This is the first big article I ever wrote. It got me a lot of attention in the early 90's. The interest people showed in these ideas is basically why I decided to become a methodologist of software projects and of software testing in particular. I was supposed to write a book based on this article, and nearly killed myself trying to, but I just couldn't do something at the time that met my own standards of not bullshitting. I could write the book now, because now I know about heuristics; now I have 25 more years of learning how people deal with complexity. Now I am not a young man. But not in 1994.
Ideas in this article paralleled the development of Agile. I was trying to use systems thinking to reinvent software development process. In fact, at the time I wrote it, at Borland International, Borland was a fountainhead of ideas that would find their way into Agile practices.
