It seems to me that the user needs to think about the candidates, examine if that feels right to them, read the report, edit the report so that it makes sense. How can DecideRight help with this process? I used QB to put in 5 names and 5 criteria Judy Lexi Phil Sam Bill Criteria (in order of importance): Performance Money-Maker Commitment Management Potential Time With Company I weighted the crieria randomly, after which, DR says Judy is the best choice. Is DR "right"? The weighting window tells you a numeric value for each weighted criteria: From: highest rating for most important criteria = 10.00 To: lowest rating for least important criteria = 1.00 I took the numeric value of the ratings for each of the criteria of each candidate and averaged them using Excel. This is the result : Lexi: 8.8 / 3.54 / 10 / 4.23 / 10 = 7.314 Judy: 7.78 / 5.44 / 5.36 / 9.56 / 7.73 = 7.174 Phil: 3.14 / 10 / 7.6 / 5.58 / 5.6 = 6.384 Sam: 5.52 / 5.79 / 9.8 / 3.2 / 4.41 = 5.744 Bill: 4.83 / 3.21 / 1.75 / 8.86 / 8.37 = 5.404 *** By this calculation, Lexi should be ranked #1. Could it be the DR has a rounding error? If I increase the "Performance" rating another tenth of a point to 8.81, Lexi "rightly" becomes the #1 choice. The difference between Lexi and Judy is then .142 By the following calculation, Bill should be the #1 choice, but he is listed 4th in the DR table: Lexi: 8.8 / 3.54 / 10 / 4.23 / 10 = 7.314 Phil: 6.05 / 10 / 7.6 / 5.58 / 5.6 = 6.966 Judy: 7.8 / 5.44 / 5.35 / 9.55 / 7.73 = 7.174 Bill: 3.63 / 5.50 / 10 / 10 / 10 = 7.826 Sam: 5.52 / 5.79 / 9.8 / 3.2 / 10 = 6.862 By straight averages, this list should be: Bill, Lexi, Judy, Phil, Sam, leading me to believe there's another dimension of weighting here. To corroborate that, if I increase Bill's "Performance" from 3.63 to 3.67 (a difference of just .04), he goes from #4 to #1. Is there more to the algorithm here, or is this a bug? BUGS ----------------------------------------------- #N/A ISSUES ----------------------------------------------- #ISSUE 1 To show this report to anyone to "drive consensus" would be embarassing to the user. It's written clearly in program-ese and would need a lot of work to be edited. Legal reasons of using a program to make decisions? #ISSUE 2 May be a floating point rounding error? See above notes on why Lexi should be ranked #1 and she isn't. The results are very close. This means the "wrong" decision might be made. #ISSUE 3 Can this be made more testable with log files -- seeing the exact numeric of how each option is evaluated?
