CAST 2007 Testing Competition Videos

O happy day!

Thanks to the tireless webmastering efforts of Scott Barber, thanks to the original efforts of my brother Jon, David Gilbert, Michael Bolton, and myself as organizers, and thanks to the contestants who participated, the full video and print record of the second CAST testing competition is now online.

Friends, this is a first. It’s the first complete, reviewable record of a serious testing competition. I conceived this in the hope that we would gather vivid examples of the testing craft that could serve as a teaching tool for new testers. I believe we succeeded.

There are videos of bug reports (most of them are great examples of how to crisply explain a bug to a manager or developer) and there are videos of test techniques (testers demonstrating how they go about finding bugs). The product was real. The developer of the product was one of the judges.

And NOTHING HERE IS CONFIDENTIAL.

This is what our craft needs if it’s going to get a lot better. We need role models; examples; demonstrations; realism; and lot less secrecy.

This is what the Association for Software Testing stands for. I’m proud to be a part of it.

    Hi James
I have recently started following your work, and I am happy to add myself to your list of growing admirers
What had initially drawn me to this site was the allpairs.pl you had created and so kindly shared it with all of us, (Just wanted to update you that we are extremely thankful for the tool and are using it to create a test study whether all pairs methodology will work for us, am keeping my fingers crossed that it will :)

I would like to express a big thanks for sharing these videos, what little I have watched till now are extremely interesting and am captivated

I had a small request, would it be feasible for the links to *download* the videos for the CAST 2007 competition
My request is due to the following reasons
    1. Its painfully slow watching the vidoes over the net from my place, and the lack of continuity is ruining the charm of watching experts at work
    2. I would like to share these videos with a captive audience, my team :), and walk them through some of the bug filing techniques and the thought processes being discussed

    With best regards
    Lohit

[James’ Reply: I think you can get the DVD with all the videos directly from AST.]
